Interview: Sons of Anarchy's Kim Coates

Kim Coates may be one of the most unassuming nice guys in the world. Sitting at the end of a large desk inside the Rogers building in Toronto, the Saskatchewan-born actor is a veritable open book, speaking candidly about anything from embodying a cocaine addict to his wife getting a kick out of having other women sit on his face, all with the diction of an accomplished theatre actor.

Much like his leathery skin and character actor visage, Coates wears a life-time of scars as badges of honour. And though he's likely been in several movies you've seen and enjoyed, it's likely you wouldn't have recognized his name in the credits. But that all may change soon, as Canada falls in love with his new show, Sons of Anarchy [already a hit currently in its fourth season in the States], in which the gentle Coates plays Tig Trager -- the meanest, roughest member of the eponymous biker gang.

"That's what a Sergeant-in-Arms does," he says, describing his character's role in the gang. "He's the protector. I'm the best at weapons. I will jump in front of my president to take the bullet. That's what these guys in real clubs do. They are tough."

And yet, the ever character conscious Coates insisted Trig not fall into the pit-falls of a one-dimensional character. "I didn't just want to be tough," he insists, squinting his eyes. "I wanted to be funny, a little bit sexual. I have issues…I'm afraid of dolls."

As such, there's a lot that his character does that the man himself wouldn't dream about. "I have to wrap my head around some things that I would never think of doing as Kim," he explains. "That's part of the erotic fear factor that I had playing this guy."

One moment in particular sticks in his mind:

"I remember this one scene where one of the Crow Eaters [the show's term for groupies] was sitting on my face on a bar top. They made sure they picked a girl whose name was Diana—which is the name of my wife. So that made it so much easier for my wife. My wife gets such a kick out of that crap. She absolutely loves it when I'm kissing someone. She absolutely giggles when anything sexual happens. I'm so so happy that Di is that way."

Much like Coates, Sons of Anarchy has lots of softer undertones which belie it's rough, violent, sexual exterior; it relishes the tender moments, often letting them dictate the tone of each episode much more than the group's more nefarious activity.

"It's based on Hamlet so there's an incredible Shakespeare theme," the Stratford veteran enthuses. "I'm a big Shakespeare guy so that attracted me. Everybody watches it from grandmothers to kids in college."

"It's esoteric," he continues. "None of us know what that biker world really is except for that fraction of the 1% who actually are in it. Even guys and girls that are in clubs, they're not in clubs like the Sons of Anarchy. Those are very rarified freedom fighting mother f**kers at times and to be a part of that world, and to get into that world, and to subsequently watch that world…it's a great world to be watching because none of us do that stuff."

Noting that, it is no surprise that, aside from reading Hunter S. Thompson's riving novel Hells Angels (or "the bible," as Coates refers to it), researching the role is not only difficult but dangerous.

"I can't really tell you [how] but I did do some research," the real life biker deadpans. "I've been very fortunate to have met one guy in particular, who is part of a club of…" he pauses, considering the possible consequences of his revelation before reconsidering and moving on.

"Being with him was a great thing for me and Tig. We've all been brushing our hands with a certain fella, and that's been some great ‘research.' But then, you've got to let that go. That's not the world that we, as actors, hang in. But I love to ride, I've been riding my whole life, and I love the tattoos and I love reading books and talking to…certain…people."

This element of danger extends beyond simply reading and hanging with disreputable fellows. As Coates tells it, there are still those who struggle to understand the underlying Shakespearian tones of the series.

"Some of these bike shows that I do go to, you have to be careful," he says. "You have to be careful when people come up to you, and they say mostly positive things, but it has happened that someone has come up to me and said, ‘Other than your character that show f**king sucks because it's not real here or it's not real there,' and I just shook his hand and said, ‘I hope you like it better next season.'"

For Coates, who has a face "only a mother could love," this is certainly not his first experience dealing with the harsh realities of his character's actions. Recently, he recalls, one of his most memorable characters moved one of the show's guest stars (and Rosanne Barr ex-husband) to compliment him on his portrayal of the tragically addicted producer Carl Ertz on Entourage's final season.

"I'm not kidding you brother, when I was handed the script to do that show I said to Diana, my wife, I've just been handed something that…I just don't know how I'm going to do this," he recalls. "This is one of the most exciting, coked out, pronominally twisted, sad -- and this is Entourage!

"Tom Arnold, whose a really good buddy of mine and had his issues with certain drugs in the past, he came up to me on the set of Sons of Anarchy and told me, ‘You have no idea how you hit that out of the park, for an addict.' I was completely obviously sober when I did the part, but the amount of movies that I watched to be reminded of certain aspects of cocaine -- it's a piece that I'm really proud of doing."

Sons of Anarchy premieres Nov. 1 at 10 pm ET/PT on FX Canada
